Argument

 Herbs as Medicine

There are various types of herbal medicine that have been used for thousands of years to successfully treat diseases. Why do we still doubt this who really knows? Herbs or plants have a long history in treating disease and health disorders. This started as a traditional Chinese medicine; for example, the history of herbal medicine goes back over 2000 years. We are most familiar with Garlic, Chamomile, Peppermint, Lavender, and other common herbs.

The pharmaceutical industry is always looking for new drugs and, more pills that are effective in treating diseases. For some there is very little or no drugs available to make any pain really go away. Herbal medicine is safer and more effective and it’s been around for thousands of years. When it comes to the cost of pills, herbs are cheaper and, does not damage the body as well as drugs do.

Most herbs are made with Dandelion, Comfrey, Digitalis, the Poppy, Milk Thistle, Stinging nettle, and many others. The dandelion is a flower that is located in many different types of herbal teas. It is believed that this could be the source of a life-saving drug for cancer patients. Early tests show that herb medicine is helping ware off cancer, which kills tens of thousands of people every year.

The problem with this is medicinal plants like Comfrey, Dandelion and other herbs usually contain hundreds of thousands of chemical compounds that help our bodies feel more relaxed than taking pills for different kinds of pains. This is a reason why manufactured drugs are based on so-called active ingredients. Which often barely work and cause unnecessary side effects.

Ethnorgraphy

The Nursing home I work at is a great home and rehab facility that takes care of elderly and sick. It provides food, shelter and a place where residents can sit back and relax. They have an excellent adult daycare, assisted living, and senior apartments. I first started working there on January 31st of this year. When I first started I was nervous and didn’t really know what to expect. I was not handed any major responsibility during my first week, just entertain the residents, and bring them outside for some fresh air and hoping to get to know a little about everyone.

On my first day, I went and gathered all the residents to the activity room where they spend time with their friends, and finally have a chance to leave their room. Everyone gets in a circle and we play cards, catch the balloon or even watch movies. As I was sitting there playing a card game I noticed an adorable lady named Anita. I went up and started a conversation with her. She was very quite and to herself didn’t really socialize too much, just sitting there with a smile.

An hour went by and I decided to get to know Anita a little bit better since she didn’t really say much at first. I asked her name and what she likes to do, she said a few words then opened up more as time went on. Anita was telling me she loves to look good and always have her hair washed and colored and nails painted in dusty rose. She told me how much she loved getting dressed up in her fancy dresses, high heel shoes and her to die for expensive jewelry her husband bought her only on special occasions. I noticed she loved looking her best, as she would say, “I rather go outside looking my best then looking a fool”.

Anita and, I became very close during those short few hours in the activity room. She would start telling me stories about how she met her husband and how long they were married for. Anita adores her six children all three boys and three girls all born 2 years apart. As she was telling me about herself and what she likes to do for fun, Anita started becoming overwhelmed, and said she missed the good old days, when she could do things for herself and her family instead of depending on nurses to look after her and having to be told what to do.

I started feeling sorry for Anita and realized I was there to help her and take her mind off anything bothering her. She’s an amazing 98-year-old woman who still has so much to offer. I learned so much from Anita she’s smart, funny and still has so much energy for someone her age. So far working there I grow a bond with her and look up to her as if I knew her my whole life. She still tells me till this day, take nothing for granted and to live everyday to it’s fullest because you never know when it can all change in just a blink of an eye.

Memoir

The person who influenced me the most in my life would have to be my
grandmother Maria Borges. She was short, 5 feet tall, with beautiful brown eyes and
soft short brown hair. She was always dressed very nicely wearing her clothing, and
matching her colors to a tee, with her gorgeous  Portuguese jewelry. She was a loving
caring woman, and was a very supportive person on the decisions that I had made
regarding any of  my career choices . One thing you would always see her doing was
laughing and smiling; she always had a positive attitude towards everyone or everything.

I visited many different countries with her and my family such as Portugal,
Canada, and Florida. The place I will never forget is one summer I went to Portugal with my
grandmother. In Portugal there was many different stores with a whole bunch on
styles of clothing to pick from. It has a lot of things always going on it was a very
active country that never sleeps. The best memory I have with her is of us was spending
time together and learning about  the jobs she did growing up as a child such as ,making
sure the house was spotless and dinner was ready before then men got home. My
grandmother taught me different things from back in her day such as the way she used to
prepare the meals and when she got the fresh milk from the cows she would make
delicious home made cheese.

One of the things I associate with my grandmother, are cooking because of
the big delicious meals. Being in a Portuguese family means you love feeding your
family and seeing everybody happy. My grandmother’s favorite foods were kale soup,
meat and potatoes and especially sweet bread, she made the best bread in our entire
family. She taught me how to make my favorite dish chicken and shrimp mozambique.
The time in the kitchen was our bonding time were she would teach me different ways of
knowing how something was cooked or if spices needed to add into a dish. In the
kitchen I had so much fun with my grandmother we would always laugh and joke around,
but moments like these I will never forget.

.

There were many special and memorable occasions because of my grandmother.
During Christmas time we would always go to my grandparent’s house and open gifts
together and share what we had received. Easter was also a special time because it was
her favorite holiday and the holiday she looked forward to the most every year. During
Halloween she would take me out to trick or treat with all my cousins. All these
occasions were special to me and were memories that I will cherish in my heart for
 the rest of my life.

When I think about her I have mixed emotions. Happy knowing she was the best
thing that had happened to me . Sad because she’s not with me anymore to see me grow
up. I was 16 years old when she passed away and it was the worst day of my life. My
grandmother was the most important person to me because she raised me and taught me
how to be the fun loving person that I am today. I will always look up to her and keep a
special place for her in my heart. I respect her for everything she has done for me. This is
the amazing women that has impacted me for the rest of my life

Rhetorical Analysis

This picture shows a young boy sitting at the breakfast table enjoying a nice big bowl of Frosted Flakes. He seems very determined to finish that whole bowl by myself. This little boy looks like he can't wait to dig his spoon some more and, take some really big bites. Near him on the table is a big box of Frosted Flakes and a gallon of ice cold milk to pore into his bowl .On all Frosted Flakes commercials there logo is THEY'RE GR-R-REAT! Which gets the children attention and all love repeating. A cereal like this so famous that everyone adores it and, it's just something that no one can really get sick of eating anytime soon

I believe this message shows us that children will always love cereal and it's one thing they will never get sick of. The audience that targets this picture sees that children of all ages love eating this or there own favorite type of cereal they love. Many kids hate new changes in life so when asked by there parents what do you really want to eat today? The majority usually repeats cereal! Cereal is the quickest and fastest way to get kids up and running for school. It's something they will always love eating.

Theme

Family is the most important part in my everyday life. I choose this topic because I know this is something I enjoy talking about and, I can tell stories about my family for days at a time. My favorite time with my family are on Sunday afternoons. This is when everyone heads over to my Grandparents house and enjoys them selves to a delicious meal. During this time we all come together and, laugh and, enjoy one another’s company. If anyone in my family is going through a rough time or, just needs a shoulder to cry on were all just a phone call away. Family is very special to me I love and respect them all. There’s one thing about family, friends come and go but your family is what you’re always going to have to fall back on in the end.

Other options:

Technology:

  • Is technology good or bad in some ways?
  • Does it help us learn new things?
  • Can people live without it?

Food :

  • Food can bring the family together.
  • The difference  between Portuguese and American cooking.
  • Cooking food with family is like building memories with the people we love.

Writer's Autobiography

I’m a very creative writer once I know exactly what I want to write about. One of my most memorable pieces of writing that I did was last semester in my writing class. I had an assignment where I had to write about my major, which was early hood education. I started to jot down ideas about the way interacting with children was important and also helping them understand when they did something wrong. I didn’t really have much to write about and wasn’t that interested in this career I’ve chosen. My teacher pulled me a side and was honest and said it wasn’t that great in seem as if I didn’t have much passion for this career so, she was nice enough to let me chose another option. I went home and started to write about the nursing field and notice that I really enjoyed learning the medical language and helping people. The next day I came in and my teacher reviewed both my papers and realized I had more of a passion for the medical field than working with children so, from that day I changed my major and, I am much happier in that field than I was when I first came here.
